My Favorite Music Artist of the Decade

This is a list that talks about my favorite artist from 2010-2019. They don’t have to start from this decade, but they have to done at least 1 album this decade. Here we go.

10: Katy Perry, the decade started out great for Katy, but her last album was a dud. Oh well, She had some great songs this decade. Roar is an anthem for strong women.

9: Clint Black, songs like Nothing’s News shows Clint still knows how to tell a story. His new album sounds great as well.

8: Brandi Carlile, a real country artist who sings from the heart and writes with passion. What a great job she has done with highlighting social issues.

7: Kacey Musgraves, she is one of the best writers I’ve seen in a long time. Progressive, smart and fierce. Musgraves can write any man under the table. Biscuits is a highlight for me.

6: Miranda Lambert, with attitude, sass and great writing. Miranda is one of the best. She makes you afraid to make her mad, and that’s great. We can be Friends is a classic.

5: Ashley Monroe, the voice of an angel and writing that pierces the heart. Ashley deserves more attention than she gets. Like A Rose is a masterpiece.

4: Oak Ridge Boys, their Dave Cobb music has been some of the best country music of the decade. They are in their 70s and 80s and can put most acts to shame when it comes to singing. Seven Nation Army is a masterwork.

3: Ariana Grande, such a gorgeous voice and soul. Her songs are vibrant, colorful and thoughtful. She can do some of the best pop music on the planet. Focus is my jam when I want to dance.

2: Vince Gill, a true master. Gill can sing, write and play instruments. His guitar playing is unmatched by most players today and he’s not afraid of taking a chance and singing controversial songs. Nothing Like A Guy Clark Song will send chills up your spine.

1: Lady Gaga, was there any doubt? She has so much range, she can do any type of music well and she can write up to the heavens and sing as well. Born this Way made me cry and made me feel proud to be me. I can’t wait to see what she does next.

How was this decade in music? It wasn’t great, but it was good. The decade started out slow, but the explosion of You Tube and indie artist helped the music industry avoid a dark decade. This ended up being a good decade for music. Let’s hope the next decade is better.

The Video Game Media Is A Joke

By Michelle Lynn Tackett

Would you give a game a great score if it was boring, repetitive and tedious? No, but a lot of journalists are giving Death Stranding great reviews. Death Stranding is a 6 at best. Yes, Death Stranding tries to be ambitious, however, it’s not well-executed. A lot of ‘positive’ reviews for Death Stranding have admitted the game is not fun to play. That is the point of video games! The video game media has shown itself for the joke they are. Here are other reasons that make the video game media, a joke.

Flash Over Substance
God of War is the perfect example. Ultra-simple puzzles, dumbed-down combat, and a focus on cinematics over gameplay. Look at the scores for games like Uncharted 4, Spiderman and Red Dead Redemption 2. All of these games have mediocre gameplay, but they have great presentations, and a strong story. The media falls for it every time. Games like Celeste, Dead Cells, and Hallowknight are much better games. They don’t get as good of reviews because they focus on gameplay. I am not saying video games shouldn’t have a good story, but it shouldn’t overshadow the gameplay. It is easy to let a story sweep you up and forget about the gameplay problems. If I wanted to watch a movie, I would boot up Netflix.

They’re For Dumbing Down Games
Monster Hunter World got the best reviews of any MH game to date. How pathetic is that? The game dumbed down the gameplay to oblivion. It took out a lot of classes, weapons, and monsters that made MHGU a great title. When PSP and 3DS Monster Hunter games have more content than a console game, that’s sad. Some critics slammed Xenoblade Chronicle 2’s combat for being too complex. Really? All the player has to do is figure out which elements chain together and you’ll create big combos that will help you defeat enemies. Seems like some gaming journalist doesn’t want to think while playing a game. I would hate to see these gaming journalists have to deal with a Rubix cube. Astral Chain got criticized for having deep combat and Fire Emblem got slammed (by a few) for not being fast-paced. At Least Fire Emblem isn’t boring like Death Stranding.

Final Thoughts
The whole media is a joke. Sports and political news are a disgrace, but you can add video games to that list as well. I have wanted to talk about this subject for a long time. The video game media has hurt really good games so they can promote more of the same. Especially from Sony. Most of Sony’s first-party games are the equivalent of Michael Bay movies. Loud, dumb, and have flash over substance. There is an uprising against the video game media. It’s about time! They have hurt video games for long enough. Let them go to a deserted island and watch reality shows forever. I want a video game, so I can have an interactive experience with fun gameplay that will make me happy.

Nintendo Switch Is On Fire!

By Michelle Lynn Tackett

According to NPD, and Nintendo Everything. The Nintendo Switch dominated Sept. 2019 sales. How dominate? It had the highest sales total since the PS4 in 2014. That is amazing. This holiday is going to be fire for the Switch! Nintendo is killing it. Luigi’s Mansion 3, Link’s Awakening, Mario Maker 2, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Astral Chain and Pokemon Sword and Shield will drive holiday sales. Plus, the Switch Lite will help.

This proves a few things. One, exclusives are still queen when it comes to moving hardware. Two, single player games still sell, and three, never count out Nintendo. What a comeback, Nintendo is on fire right now. The Switch will easily pass 100 million in console sales in it’s lifetime. What a great time to be a Nintendo fan.

Review: The Good Place is A Great Show

I love it when I find a show that makes me feel good. The Good Place is a show like that. I smile from beginning to end. It is becoming my favorite show on TV. I love it that much. Why? Here’s why.

Characters
Kristen Bell is delightful as Elanor, who ends up in the Good Place, (she doesn’t belong there), she is so charming and cute from the get-go. You root for Elanor, even though she’s not a great person. Ted Danson is sensational as Michael or the creator. All the characters are given lots of room to grow, and develop. Each episode reveals new layers to the characters, giving them depth.

Story
There is no heaven or hell. The Good Place is Heaven, and the Bad Place is Hell. Each person is judged by their actions, if they get enough good points, they make it to the Good Place. The story starts simple but gets more complex as the season goes on. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Writing
Funny jokes, heartwarming moments, and rich dialogue show how good the writing is. Drew Goddard worked on Buffy, so it’s not surprising the Good Place has great writing. The story has twists, you care about the characters, and the jokes never insult the audience’s intelligence. This is how you write a show.

Flaws
No show is perfect. Sometimes, there is too much going on in the story. Focusing on one story might be better. Some of the jokes fall flat.

Rating
The Good Place is a GREAT show! I cannot recommend it enough. Great characters, wonderful stories, and writing make this show a winner. I haven’t liked a comedy this much since Scrubs.
Grade: 4 Stars, watch this show. It’s a winner!

Ariana Grande Is the New Mariah Carey

Voice like an angel? Yep. Gorgeous production for her songs? Yep. A lot of no1 hits early in her career? Yep, yep, yep. Heck, Airana has sone All I Want For Christmas. Mariah’s perennial Christmas classic. Ariana is on her way to being the new Mariah. I hope her PTSD don’t make her retire. She can have a long career if she takes care of her voice and her health.

She can be better than Mariah. Sing more personal songs and expand her writing to darker subjects. Don’t get boring. Mariah got stale for awhile until she changed it up to get her grove back.

If Ariana can avoid the mistakes Mariah made, she can have a long career. She has the talent and looks to carry her a long way. The only thing that could stop her is her severe PTSD. I hope she gets it under control. She could be a great artist for decades to come.

Death Stranding Sales and Critical Predictions

Kojima’s name carries so much weight in the video game industry. Whenever one of his games is announced, it gets a lot of attention. Death Stranding is no different. The hype has been mixed, but since the game has been released to reviewers, it is getting some positive buzz. I am gonna predict how this game will do sales and critically.

Critical reception

This is so hard to predict. I do think a lot of critics will appreciate the game, but I also think there are gonna be a lot of detractors as well. I am gonna give a wide birth. This game will go between 74-86. I think it comes down to how much fun the reviewer has with the game. Kojima has said the game takes awhile to get going. Will some critics be patient? Will the payoff be worth it? I think some critics will love the mystery and story, while others will hate how convoluted and boring it is.

Sales

So many people have this game doing great. I don’t know. I think it depends. If the review scores are great, yes, it will do great. However, if the scores are mixed. It will start out strong, but fall fast. If the reviews are over 86, the game will sell 2 million it’s first week and 5-6 million overall. If the scores are below 79, it will do 1.5 million it’s opening week and 2.7 million overall. I think the latter is what’s gonna happen.

This game is an acquired taste. It’s not a mainstream game and it will baffle a lot of players and critics. It will have a following, but it’s not gonna break out like HZD did.

Favorite Movies of All Time Part 7 40-31

By Michelle Lynn Tackett

We are getting up there now. Here come some beloved classics and hidden gems.

40: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Jack Nicholson delivers a performance for the ages as Randle P Murphy, who is living in a mental institution with other colorful characters. The abuse some of the patients take at the hands of nurse Nurse Ratched is painful to watch. One of the best movies ever made.
Rating: 4 Stars, this is a magical experience.

39: A Touch of Evil, Orson Welles was a master filmmaker, and this movie was a perfect example of that. Top-notch performances and great plot twists elevate this movie to another level. Wells’s ability to craft a twisting story with innovation is legendary. Watch this movie, you’ll love it.
Rating: 4 Stars, a must-see cinematic experience.

38: A Nightmare on Elm Street, not the best horror movie I’ve seen, but it’s one of my favorites. Robert Englund steals every scene as the maniacal Freddy Kruger. Wes Craven gives us kids to root for, not kids who we don’t care about. Imaginative special effects and perfect direction make this a classic.
Rating: 4 Stars, one of the best horror movies ever.

37: The Fugitive, the legendary Harrison Ford. He is so underrated. This movie shows why. Ford’s ability to play every person is perfect. We root for him to clear his name and fear for him when he’s in danger. The script is tight, the action scenes are thrilling, and the performances are perfect. A classic that still holds up.
Rating: 4 Stars, a thrill-ride that never gets hold.

36: Roma, Netflix made the best picture of 2018 with this stunner. You know you have a winner when the characters live a boring life, but you’re still fascinated. Each character is fully developed, the story is intriguing, and the directing is stunning. The gorgeous cinematography and glorious music are icing on the cake.
Rating: 4 Stars, you have to see this movie! It’s that good.

35: Wait Until Dark, one of the most influential thrillers of all time. Alan Arkin laid the groundwork for action villains with his performance as Harry Roat Jr. Audrey Hepburn in her last Oscar-nominated performance is priceless. Some may complain about the slow pace but have patience. The last 15 minutes are a rocket.
Rating: 4 Stars, a nail-biting thriller with great acting.

34: A Fantastic Woman, the best movie made about someone being trans. Daniela Vega is electrifying as Marina, who faces prejudice from her lover’s family. The subject is handled with subtle care. Beautiful directing and cinematography give it an otherworldly feel. This is how you do a movie about trans people.
Rating: 4 Stars, a touching masterpiece that will make you think.

33: What About Bob, Bill Murray is a gem. He has comedic gold for timing. What About Bob could’ve been a disaster in the wrong hands, but Murray saves the day. The ending divided people, but I loved it. This is how you do a good comedy.
Rating: 4 Stars, one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen.

32: Wall-E, my favorite Disney movie ever made. Nothing comes close. What a magical movie with an adorable robot as the lead, and his adorable love interest Eva. Gorgeous animation, adorable characters, great storytelling, and a timely message make Wall-E a classic.
Rating: 4 Stars, the best movie Disney has ever done.

31: X-Men Days of Future Past, the second-best X-Men movie. The story is engaging, the performances are great, and the action scenes are mind-blowing. Hugh Jackman plays Wolverine to perfection. This is one of the best comic book movies I’ve ever seen.
Grade: 4 Stars, this is a must-see for comic book fans and non-comic book fans alike.

Is Silence of the Lamb Transphobic?

By Michelle Lynn Tackett

Buffalo Bill is often used to mock transgender people. He wants to wear women’s skin, and the famous scene of him tucking his penis causes some to think he is transgender. This is a very big mischaracterization of the character according to director Johnathan Demme. From an article published by Slate, the interview was done by Film Comment,

“He described the killer as “someone who is so completely, completely horrified by who he is that his desperation to become someone completely other is manifested in his ill-guided attempts at transvestism, and behavior and mannerisms that can be interpreted as gay.” To be fair, Demme is correct—in the movie, Hannibal Lecter posits that Gumb apes queer and trans people because they’re the most outré, far-off identities he can imagine—the ultimate escape.”

The problem comes from the context. Anyone who listened to Hannibal will know he said that Buffalo Bill wasn’t transgender, but some missed the analogy it seems. Transphobes use Buffalo Bill as an example of how trans people are mentally disturbed. Is it the movie’s fault? No. Buffalo Bill wants to transform into another person, not another gender.

The movie could’ve done a better job of distinguishing how Buffalo Bill was not transgender. This caused Ted Levine to get unnecessary heat. The actor who played Buffalo Bill hated the backlash. Screenhub interviewed with Ted Levine and they said,

” Realizing that the LGBT community had nothing to do with his character, Levine set out to search for a new angle by which to play him, insisting on not playing the character as gay. Rather, he tried to play the character as someone who despised homosexuals and transgender people to mask his insecurities.”

Jonathan Demme and Ted Levine claim they weren’t stereotyping gays or trans people, does that make it true? No, but there’s no evidence of them being homophobic or transphobic. It’s not wise to make accusations without proof. Until there is evidence, Buffalo Bill isn’t transgender.

Trans people have been represented horribly in pop culture. Look at Ace Ventura Pet Detective. That’s a blatant example of transphobia. It’s not the director or the actor’s fault if some misinterpret the character. This won’t stop some from using him, but if we educate people that Buffalo Bill isn’t trans, trolls will stop using him. Without evidence, the Silence of the Lambs is not transphobic.
