The Video Game Media Is A Joke

By Michelle Lynn Tackett

Would you give a game a great score if it was boring, repetitive and tedious? No, but a lot of journalists are giving Death Stranding great reviews. Death Stranding is a 6 at best. Yes, Death Stranding tries to be ambitious, however, it’s not well-executed. A lot of ‘positive’ reviews for Death Stranding have admitted the game is not fun to play. That is the point of video games! The video game media has shown itself for the joke they are. Here are other reasons that make the video game media, a joke.

Flash Over Substance
God of War is the perfect example. Ultra-simple puzzles, dumbed-down combat, and a focus on cinematics over gameplay. Look at the scores for games like Uncharted 4, Spiderman and Red Dead Redemption 2. All of these games have mediocre gameplay, but they have great presentations, and a strong story. The media falls for it every time. Games like Celeste, Dead Cells, and Hallowknight are much better games. They don’t get as good of reviews because they focus on gameplay. I am not saying video games shouldn’t have a good story, but it shouldn’t overshadow the gameplay. It is easy to let a story sweep you up and forget about the gameplay problems. If I wanted to watch a movie, I would boot up Netflix.

They’re For Dumbing Down Games
Monster Hunter World got the best reviews of any MH game to date. How pathetic is that? The game dumbed down the gameplay to oblivion. It took out a lot of classes, weapons, and monsters that made MHGU a great title. When PSP and 3DS Monster Hunter games have more content than a console game, that’s sad. Some critics slammed Xenoblade Chronicle 2’s combat for being too complex. Really? All the player has to do is figure out which elements chain together and you’ll create big combos that will help you defeat enemies. Seems like some gaming journalist doesn’t want to think while playing a game. I would hate to see these gaming journalists have to deal with a Rubix cube. Astral Chain got criticized for having deep combat and Fire Emblem got slammed (by a few) for not being fast-paced. At Least Fire Emblem isn’t boring like Death Stranding.

Final Thoughts
The whole media is a joke. Sports and political news are a disgrace, but you can add video games to that list as well. I have wanted to talk about this subject for a long time. The video game media has hurt really good games so they can promote more of the same. Especially from Sony. Most of Sony’s first-party games are the equivalent of Michael Bay movies. Loud, dumb, and have flash over substance. There is an uprising against the video game media. It’s about time! They have hurt video games for long enough. Let them go to a deserted island and watch reality shows forever. I want a video game, so I can have an interactive experience with fun gameplay that will make me happy.

Legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening: Review

By Michelle Lynn Tackett

Few things bring a smile to my face like a top/down Zelda game. The art style, enemies and dungeons bring back memories. That’s why I was excited when I saw Link’s Awakening trailer. Is this a legendary remake? Let’s find out.

Graphics
They are gorgeous and adorable. You will hug your Switch the whole time! The textures, lighting, and colors are fantastic. Some people talk about the frame rate dropping, such as when the game changes from one screen to the next, but I didn’t experience that. Grizzo did a great job with the graphics. Just because it looks cute, doesn’t mean it’s not a powerhouse. The animations are fluid. This is the best looking game on the Switch until Luigi’s Mansion 3 comes out.

Gameplay
There is nothing groundbreaking here. It’s a typical top/down Zelda game. That’s fine with me. Link gets the master-sword, Hylian shield, bombs, arrows, and more. Because of the extra buttons on the Switch controller, you don’t have to keep removing items. You can use more than one at a time. This is a major upgrade over the original. There are no major changes to the game-play, so if you’ve played any top/down Zelda games before, you know what to expect. Lots of post-game content including a colored dungeon, and a dungeon maker.

Music
The updated music is a delight to the ears! The remastered orchestras and strings give more power to the music. Plus, Ballad of the Wind Fish has lyrics! They will send chills up your spine.

Story
Without giving away anything for those who haven’t played Link’s Awakening. All I will say is Link wakes up on an island inhabited by strange creatures and likable characters. He tries to find a way off the island. How does he do that? Play the game to find out.

Flaws
There are a few flaws in the game. It’s not BOTW in size, but not every game is. The game does end a little abruptly, so that’s one area I would change. The biggest flaw is the Dungeon creator. It’s not Mario Maker 2.

Verdict: It’s a top/down Zelda Game, that’s all there is to say. The dungeons are great graphics are adorable and the gameplay is top-notch. Is this worth sixty bucks? Absolutely!

Grade: 4 Stars, a must-own adventure that plays wonderfully on the Switch.

Why I Love Zelda Link’s Awakening Remake So much

I am so happy Nintendo is remaking this game with all new graphics, new mini games and a dungeon creator. What I really love is a new generation will get to experience this classic.

So many people have gotten into Zelda because of Breath of the Wild. Wait until you play this adorable game with whimsical characters, a cute art style, clever dungeons, a glorious soundtrack, good story and solid game play. If you have never played this game, get the remake and experience this classic.

I have so many found memories of this game, and I can’t wait to experience for everyone to enjoy this game. The clever way Mario enemies were worked into this game, was so good. Just get it people. It comes out September 20th for the Nintendo Switch. It is one of the most anticipated games this year, with good reason. This is in my top 5 Zelda games, and this remake may push it up into the top 3. I am overly excited!
