Birds of A Feather Review! Does Billie Eilish’s Song Soar Like A Bird?
Written by: Michelle Lynn Tackett
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I didn’t like Billie Eilish. I thought she was an overrated media figure—full of hype but lacking substance. I was wrong. Billie is an incredible talent with a generational voice, exceptional songwriting skills, and a keen ear for music. With her single “Birds of a Feather,” has she delivered her best work yet, or is this just more hype without substance?
Music
Billie’s music has a certain flair to it. It’s mild and tends to let Billie’s beautiful voice do the talking and this is no different. From the soft guitar to the beautiful, subtle piano notes, you know it’s a Billie Eilish song. It’s clean, soft, and effective.
You can hear the drums in the background, but they aren’t overpowering the song. Sometimes modern songs rely too heavily on loud instruments. I love it when songs let the instruments bring the music to life, not beat it into your head. I love the earthy, and heavenly sound the music gives off. It lets Billie’s vocals do the real talking. It gives off a non-cynical vibe, and it fits perfectly.
The production is perfect. Not too soft, not too loud. When the gorgeous chorus kicks in, you feel like you’re flying on clouds in love. The theme is love and the music fits that to a tee. Billie and her brother know how to make a song pop. You can tell they loved writing and producing this song.

Vocals
Billie’s voice is used to perfection with shifting tones and notes wrapped around her angelic delivery. Billie can sing a song like no one else. She can sing subtly like she’s singing a lullaby, or she can inject more strength to give it a sassy attitude. With “Birds of a Feather“, Billie opts for a bit of both. She starts out whispering to you, then she kicks it into high gear when the chorus starts. She goes from whispers to loudly proclaiming her love for someone, with a tongue-in-cheek twist.
Does Billie hit every note right? Yes, she does, and she’s a master at that. I want to shout, “I’m in love!” After I’ve heard the song play, and part of that is due to Billie’s near-flawless delivery. There’s so much emotion and honesty in her voice. Even when she tries to be cheeky or funny, it comes off as sincere, instead of mockingly or cynically. That’s the mark of a great singer.

Lyics
As much as people talk about Billie’s singing (and rightfully so), it’s her lyrics with her brother Finneas, that make their songs magical. The lyrics are open for interpretation in some of their songs, and pretty clear in their meanings in other songs, and with “Birds of a Feather“, they go for an open interpretation. Some take the song as a breakup song, some as a love song and some take it as a song Billie wrote to her brother and how she can’t live without him. Which one is right? Who knows. Billie and Finneas have said they like to let the audience make up their minds on what their songs mean. Your interpretation is just as good as mine, and I love that about their writing.
My favorite line in the song is, “If you go, I’m going too, uh ‘Cause it was always you.” This is how you get your point across in a song. It’s simple, but you can use your imagination on who or what the song means. I love that. It’s clever and memorable. What you want from the lyrics is a sense of it tying together and giving you a sense of knowing the writer. With Billie, she lets you into her world and trusts you to know what she means.
The lyrics are a perfect mix of romantic, twisty, and sincere. It’s poetry put to song and that’s the highest compliment I can give a song. When you take a songwriting class, this should be one of the songs your teacher uses to show how to properly write a song. It’s been a long time since a song’s lyrics made me feel so much, and that’s because of Billie and Finneas’s ability to understand the human condition and how to express it. Absolute perfection.

Verdict
There are lots of songs I love in the modern era of music, but few make my favorite of all time lists, but this one does. With its perfect mix of heavenly music, meaningful lyrics, and Billie’s beautiful balance of soft and sassy vocals makes this song one for the ages.
If you aren’t sure about Billie’s talent. I recommend you give this song a listen. You may find this is the song that turns you into a Billie Eilish fan. If it isn’t. Check your pulse or your heart, because they may not be working.
